CONWAY- The Chanticleers defeated Presbyterian College 1-0 in a Big South Conference clash on senior night at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
The Coastal Carolina (7-7-1, 3-2-0, Big South) seniors did not disappoint their fans as the group came up big on the night. Senior Anna Tupy scored the match's only and eventual game winning goal at the 69:23 mark of the contest. Tupy received a pass from fellow senior Sara Niles, raced past a Blue Hose defender and lifted a shot over the keeper and into net. The goal was Tupy's fourth on the season while the assist was the first for Niles.
With the goal, Tupy moves into three-way tie for fifth all-time in the Coastal record books with 15 goals in her career.
Senior goal keeper Amy Haggard ran her record to 4-0-1 on the season as she tallied three saves on the night and turned in her second clean sheet of the season. The shutout also extends Haggard's career shutout tally to 21, which is the all-time career high at Coastal.
Presbyterian (5-8-1, 2-2-0, Big South) had their best chance to net the equalizer in the 86th minute off the foot of Rebecca Miller, but Coastal's Haggard made a diving stop to deflect the ball harmlessly away and ensure that a 1-0 lead would be enough for the Chants.
The first half turned into a defensive struggle as neither team could keep control of the ball and mount an offensive threat. The teams went into the half knotted at zero with Coastal holding a 4-1 edge in shots.
"It feels great to be on the positive side of a game like this against Presbyterian, who came into the game with a better conference record," said head coach Tammy DeCesare. "We have been working hard to sharpen ourselves over the past few weeks. That hard work and effort paid off tonight. We are still improving and it looks as though we are peaking as a team during the right portion of the season."
Seniors Anna Tupy, Colleen Schohl, Karen Pavlick, Sara Niles, and Amy Haggard were honored for their contributions to Coastal Carolina women's soccer before the game.
"It is great to see the seniors win on senior night in front of their families and friends; especially this group of seniors, who have done so much for this program," said DeCesare.
Tupy led the Chanticleers with three of the team's ten shots. The Chants also finished with a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Chants will play at home on Monday, Oct. 18, which will be the final home game of the season, as they host the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville at 4 p.m. The match will feature a hot dog cookout while supplies last and a Chick-fil-a Halloween Wig and Hat contest with the winners receiving free Chick-fil-a.
