Coastal Carolina Baseball Gets Multiple Honors

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina baseball team received numerous acclamations in honor of its record-setting 2010 season in a ceremony at Watson Stadium. On hand were members of the Coastal Carolina executive staff, as well as legislators from Conway, Horry County and South Carolina.
The ceremony began with Coastal Carolina University president Dr. David DeCenzo presenting Chanticleer head baseball coach Gary Gilmore with an NCAA plaque, noting Coastal as the national leader in winning percentage for 2010. The Chants had a winning percentage of .846 and also led the nation in wins with 55, going 55-10.
Next, the honorable Liston Barfield and Alan Clemmons of the South Carolina House of Representatives read a proclamation unanimously passed citing Coastal Carolina for leading with excellence in the classroom and on the field.
Liz Gilland, Chair of the Horry County Council; Alys Lawson, Mayor of the City of Conway; and Tom Brown, a Coastal Carolina board member of the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce First Vice President, all followed with similar proclamations lauding the baseball team's achievements.
At the conclusion, Coach Gilmore spoke on how special the 2010 season was, the benchmark that team set for the future and how the 2010 Chanticleers will be looked upon as the team which help set in motion the future facility upgrades the program will enjoy.
Also, representing the 2010, All-American and fifth-round draft pick Cody Wheeler addressed the crowd on behalf of the squad, thanking them for their great support.
Highlights of the 2010 Coastal Carolina Baseball Season:
- Was the NCAA statistical champion for winning percentage at .846 (55-10).
- Won an NCAA-best 55 games, setting both school and Big South Conference records for wins.
- Finished second in the RPI standings.
- Went 25-0 in league play and 4-0 at the conference championship to capture both the Big South regular-season and tournament titles.
- Was the #4 overall seed to the 2010 NCAA Championships, winning the Myrtle Beach Regional and hosting the Myrtle Beach Super Regional.
- Austin Fleet was named first team Academic All-America and the Big South's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
- Anthony Meo was unanimous Big South Pitcher of the Year and first team All-American.
- Jose Iglesias was one of three finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation's top catcher, as well as being named All-American.
- Cody Wheeler and Rico Noel were also named All-American, while Ryan Connolly was named Freshman All-American.
- Had seven players drafted by Major League Baseball.
- Placed nine on the All-Big South team, including a Big South-record eight first team selections.
- Rico Noel and Scott Woodward ranked 1-2 in the NCAA in stolen bases with 56 and 55 respectively, becoming just the second set of teammates to accomplish the feat. Noel also ranked eighth in runs scored (82), while Woodward was 17th (75).
- Anthony Meo and Cody Wheeler ranked second and fifth nationally in wins with 13 and 12, respectively. Meo additionally ranked 22d in strikeouts (113) and 29th in ERA (2.61).
- Also in the NCAA statistical top 10, Coastal Carolina ranked third in home runs (111), third in stolen bases (161), fourth in runs scored (603), fifth in sacrifice bunts (71), seventh in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (8.37), eighth in ERA (3.53), eighth in scoring (9.1 runs per game), ninth in slugging percentage (.553) and ninth in walks (310).
- In addition to those listed above, individually or note, Jose Igelesias ranked 16th nationally in RBI (80).
