Black Takes 1-0 Lead in Chanticleer World Series

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina baseball team started its 2010 fall World Series Friday afternoon with the Black squad defeating the Teal, 7-0, following a one-and-a-half hour session of showing their skills to at least 30 Major League Baseball scouts at Watson Stadium.

In the winning effort, freshman Jacob May was 3-for-5 with a double and three-run home run, while catcher Tucker Frawley was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Daniel Bowman led the Teal team, reaching base three times and going 2-for-3.

Prior to the start of the Chanticleer World Series, the Coastal Carolina position players ran the 60-yard dash, took infield/outfield and had batting practice for the scouts on hand. Nine of the draft-eligible pitchers showcased their skills during the nine-inning game.

The game started with a single by T.J. Young off All-American Anthony Meo. However, Meo picked Young off at first and never looked back, striking out four over his three innings. He only allowed with one hit with no walks, throwing 35 pitches with 24 being strikes.

The Black, facing Jim Birmingham, opened with a four-pitch walk to Hayes Orton, who scored one batter later on Josh Conway's double down the left field line. Tommy La Stella moved Conway to third on a ground out and Rich Witten made the score 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

From that point, Birmingham settled in and he only allowed a total of two hits, two runs and a walk in his three innings with four strikeouts.

In the sixth, K.J. McAllister hit a line drive to second, which La Stella made an impressive leaping catch. The play proved big as the next batter, Young, doubled, which likely would have scored McAllister. After the double, Jordon Coons struck out Keith Hardwick to keep the score 2-0.

In the home half of the sixth, Zach Lopes had a leadoff walk and Frawley singled past a drawn-in infield, advancing to second on the throw to third, to put two runners in scoring position. May squared an inside fastball which quickly cleared the left field wall for a three-run home run and a 5-0 Black lead.

Despite being up 5-0, as part of the three-game series, the Black team still batted in the bottom of the ninth and tacked on two runs. Frawley was hit by a pitch and May followed with a double to left-center field. Orton sharply singled back up the middle to plate both Frawley and May to provide the final margin.

"Today was like most of fall practice," said head coach Gary Gilmore. "We were hot and cold at times. I am still getting used to having so many new guys around this fall and frankly have to do a better job of coaching. I have been spoiled the past two-three years, having a very veteran club. I will say I think we are pitching better, as a staff, and have some real depth that does not quite show up when the team is divided. These new bats also make a difference. There were several balls hit today that could have been home runs or at least doubles off the wall, but went caught for outs. We had several guys hit some hard balls and have nothing to show for it. I know these guys are anxious to get back out there Saturday and Sunday and compete."

Games two and three of the Chanticleer World Series will be Saturday (10:30 am) and Sunday (1:30 pm) at Watson Stadium. Admission is free.
