The first day of the Ryder Cup everyone in Wales woke up to rain showers. The golf course was nearly unplaybale from the beginning. Most tour events, competition would not even have been considered.
However, if the Ryder Cup is not completed by 6pm on Monday, the US retains the cup. You knew they would make every effort to get some holes in regardless of the near flood conditions.
With that said, at 7:45 am, Coastal Golf history was made when Dustin hit the first shot of the 2010 Ryder Cup. It was an incredible experience to hear,"representing the United States, Dustin Johnson." His shot sailed just a little right coming to rest in the right rough.
I felt so bad for the players and especially the caddies. The weather was horrible and the conditions required the players to play lift clean and place. The spectators had miserable conditions as everyone was tracking through wet cold mud. Of course, the one time I forget to pack my waterproof Adidas golf shoes would be this trip.
The conditions reminded me of the US Open at Bethpage a few years back. The viewing areas are all very steep with every step a possible wipe out.
Dustin and Phil played solid but just could not get the putters going. Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood played wonderful with Martin being the only player holing putts.
After 6 holes, play was suspended. President DeCenzo, Hunter, and I spent the next 7 hours as guests in the PGA Ryder Cup Hospitailty, trying to stay caught up with emails and watching highlights from the last 30 Ryder Cups.
Finally at 5:30 pm, play resumed. The US team came charging out the delay. They went up in 3 matches while Phil and DJ fought back to just one down. Darkness stopped play again around 7 pm.
We headed back to the hotel for a much deserved hot shower and dry clothes. We had a quick dinner in Cardiff and then back for some needed rest.
Another early morning (today) for me. I am meeting Dustin on the putting green at 7 am. My wakeup call at 4 am (11 pm at home). The forecast looks promising with some sunshine projected. The US looks strong to get at least 2 points in the first fourball matches.
Tommorrow will be a long day with matches going all day. It is going to be an exciting day for this awesome international competition. Dustin is going to get the putter going and get us some points.
