Final Stats
CONWAY- The Chanticleer women's soccer team was defeated by High Point 1-0 in the Big South Conference opener for both teams. With the loss Coastal falls to 4-6 (0-1, BSC) and High Point improves to 3-8 (1-0, BSC).
The Chants, in their first home game of the season, came out on the attack early as the majority of the first half was played on the High Point side of the field. Although Coastal out shot and out cornered High Point in the period, the Panthers were able to keep the score knotted at zero at the half.
Through the first half the Coastal defense was able to limit High Point's attack to a mere two shots and no corner kicks.
The second half started with High Point on the offensive; firing two shots that were saved by Jessica Barton in the first 15 minutes of the period. The Panthers broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute of the contest as Jenny Butler was able to steal a pass from the Chants at the edge of the offensive third and take a shot from 35 yards out that curved under the crossbar just above Coastal's leaping Barton.
After the goal, the Chants resumed their pressure on the Panther defense; having numerous consecutive runs along the sidelines that would eventually be foiled by the visitors.
Morgan Thomas and Hannah Brown would have the best scoring opportunities for the Chants late in the game. Thomas' opportunity came with seven minutes to play as she stepped in front of a High Point pass near the keeper's box, made a defender miss and fired a shot from 10 yards out that skimmed over the crossbar. Through steady pressure on the Panthers defense, Brown was able to break free down the far sideline in the final minute of the contest and lay a cross into the box intended for Christina Stern, who was streaking towards the goal, which was ultimately reigned in by the High Point keeper.
At the final horn, the Chanticleers had out shot the visiting Panthers 9-6 and out cornered them as well 4-1. Both goal keepers ended with four saves on the night. Thomas finished with a game high three shots on the night.
Coastal will continue their homestand on Monday afternoon as they host Big South foe Liberty in a match slated for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
