CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team (5-7) was shutout 6-0 in the final game of the 2010 Kickin' Chicken Classic against Jacksonville this afternoon. Overall, the Chanticleers went 1-3 in the event.
Senior Ashley Frederick got her third start of the tournament and took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits. After the Dolphins scored their third run in the top of the third inning, Michelle Evans came in to relieve Frederick. Evans made her first outing in the circle on the season, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out five.
Coastal looked like it was going to try to build a comeback after Jazmin Daigle led off the second inning with a single through the left side. Cacia Pierre moved Daigle to second on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball advanced her to third. With a runner 60 feet away, a Coastal strikeout ended the inning, stranding Daigle and Alyssa Tornatore, who walked.
The Chants tried to get something started in the third and fourth innings, but could not muster up the clutch hit they needed to stay alive. Mecaela Ballard, Daigle, Pierre and Olivia Piccirillo were the only Chants to get hits and Coastal struggled at the plate.
Jacksonville got on the board early, scoring one run in each of the first three innings. The Dolphins were held scoreless by Michelle Evans until the sixth, when Kelly McKeon drove in pinch runner Lauren Even to bring the lead to four. Jacksonville did not stop there, as lead-off hitter Kayla Ouellet hit a hard ground ball to the Jazmin Daigle, who was unable to make a play, sending Kayla Shavers home. The final Dolphin run scratched across the plate in the seventh inning off a Chant error.
Jacksonville's Sarah Sigrest got the win for the Dolphins, pitching a complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
Coastal Carolina is back on the road next weekend, as they travel to North Carolina State for the Wolfpack Challege, March 5-7. The Chanticleers are scheduled to play their first game against the Wolfpack on Friday, March 5 at 6 p.m.
