Final Stats
CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 42 Penn State on Tuesday, March 9 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The Chanticleers fell to 9-3 on the season as No. 42 Penn State improved to 11-1.
The Chanticleers lost the doubles point when they fell in the first two matches of the day. In No. 2 doubles, Ryan Gormley and Warren Hardie handed senior Ernesto Ramos and junior Alex Funkhouser their first loss of the season, 8-4. In No. 3 doubles St. Maurice Gauillaume and Taylor Cohen topped senior Dmitry Vlaskin and junior Dorian Sovic, 8-4. The only win of the day came in No. 1 doubles with juniors Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham defeating Eddie Bourchier and Jason Lee, 8-6.
Things did not get better for the Chants as they could not catch Penn State in singles. Gordon fell to Bourchier, 7-5, 6-3. Ryan Gormley defeated Vlaskin 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles, while Hardie beat Ramos 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 position. Lee handed Funkhouser his first singles loss of the season, 6-3, 6-4 and Bryan Welnetz topped senior Tzvetkov 6-3, 6-3. In the final match of the day, St. Maurice defeated Sovic 6-1, 6-2.
The Chanticleers will look to redeem themselves as they finish a home swing, taking on James Madison on Friday, March 12 at 12 p.m.
