Women's Tennis Earns 4-3 Win at UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. - After dropping the doubles point, the Coastal Carolina University women's tennis team rebounded to earn a 4-3 win at UNC Wilmington, April 7. With the win, the Chanticleers moved to 15-4 on the year, while the Seahawks fell to 13-7. This was just the second time this season that Coastal had won a match after dropping the doubles point.
UNCW picked up the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Christina Lee and Lindsay Leblang disposed of Coastal's Mary Hill and Paty Cortes, 8-2, to get things started. However, the Chants' Lexi Bolesky and Miki Bunea then earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 over Christina Riley and Kayla Schwenk to take it to the final match for the doubles point. At No. 3, the battled went into a tiebreaker between Coastal's Kim Webb and Maria Camberos and UNCW's Chelsea Kahle and Hartley Collins, where the hosts won the tiebreak 7-4 to earn the first team point of the match.
In singles, Coastal knotted the match up with a win at No. 5, as Cortes defeated Kahle, 6-4, 6-1. UNCW re-took the lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win by Lee over Bolesky at No. 1. Next to finish was the first of the three-set battles, as Coastal's No. 3 Webb rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Riley, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Chants then took the lead on Hill's 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dashiell at No. 6. UNCW made the match 3-3 after a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 4 by Leblang over Camberos. The match came down to No. 2, as Coastal's Bunea and UNCW's Schwenk battled, with Schwenk taking the first set 6-4 and Bunea coming back for a 7-5 win in the second set. In the key third, Bunea, playing her second straight three-set match with the team win on the line, took control early and pulled away for a 6-2 win to finish the win for Coastal.
"This was another great college tennis match," Head Coach Jody Davis "UNC Wilmington is a very good team and this is a quality win for us. Our girls never quit and I hope we can continue this momentum throughout the rest of the season. I am very proud of team's effort today."
The Chanticleers are back in action in a key Big South Conference matchup, traveling to Rock Hill to take on Winthrop Sat., April 10 at 11 a.m.
