CONWAY, S.C. - The fourth-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (42-6, 20-0 Big South) won its 30th straight Big South Conference game, completing a sweep of Winthrop (21-25, 9-12 Big South) with a 10-4 victory over the Eagles May 10 in Conway, S.C. The Chants gave up 19 hits but the Eagles stranded 16 runners on the day.
Redshirt-senior Austin Fleet earned the start and loaded the bases in the first, but got out of the jam as Sean Sullivan flied to right and sophomore Daniel Bowman was able to keep the runner on third. Fleet then induced Max Vogel into a groundout to end the inning. The Chants put up a run in the first as redshirt-sophomore Tommy La Stella singled home junior Rico Noel, who singled to open the game.
Winthrop tied the game at one in the third on Eddie Rohan's 12th home run of the season, but the Chants answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Noel hit his seventh home run of the season with one out. Junior Scott Woodward then walked, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on another La Stella single.
Sophomore Taylor Motter and redshirt-senior Chance Gilmore hit back-to-back home runs for the third time this year in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Chants a 5-1 lead. Coastal made it 8-1 in the fifth as senior Adam Rice belted a two-run home run to left center field and Gilmore scored Bowman with a single to right.
Winthrop plated a pair of runs in the sixth as Patrick Gamblin walked, moved to third on a Matt Pierpont single and scored on a Tyler Cook single. With one out and a runners on first and second, Rohan reached on a fielder's choice and Pierpont was safe at third on a Motter throwing error. Rohan then beat out the throw to second on a fielder's choice from Sean Sullivan, scoring Pierpont. Coastal got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as a Rice infield single plated Woodward.
Both teams added runs in the eighth. Winthrop scored on an Adam Gliebe singled that scored Chas Crane. La Stella drove in his third run of the day on a single to center that scored redshirt-sophomore Tucker Frawley.
La Stella and Noel had three hits apiece for the Chants. Rice joined La Stella with three runs-batted-in. For Winthrop, Cook, Gliebe and Pierpont had three hits apiece.
Junior Matt Rein earned his sixth win of the year, pitching two innings of relief with five hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. Fleet went the first four innings, allowing eight hits and a run with three strikeouts. Dom Patterozzi took the loss for Winthrop. He gave up six hits and five runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Coastal Carolina swept Winthrop for the first time since the 2002 season.
Winthrop left two or more runners on base in six of the nine innings.
Coastal Carolina now is set up for a big three-game series at second-place Liberty. The series starts Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m., in Lynchburg, Va.
