CONWAY - For the second consecutive year, all 17 of Coastal Carolina University's athletic programs have exceeded the standard set by the NCAA as part of its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Data for the most recent APR was taken from the academic years of 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. Meeting or exceeding the baseline score of 925, out of a possible 1,000, indicates that a team has met the NCAA's standards for academic performance.
While no Chanticleer athletic programs achieved a perfect score of 1,000, nine teams scored above 970, including men's golf (994), women's tennis (992), women's indoor track & field (989), women's outdoor track & field (989), men's cross country (983), men's tennis (983), women's cross country (983), volleyball (983) and softball (971).
The men's golf and women's tennis programs ranked among the nation's 80th-90thpercentiles, while men's golf and the women's indoor and outdoor track & field programs each ranked in the 80th-90th percentiles within their respective sports.
Among the Big South Conference institutions, Coastal Carolina produced the top APR in men's tennis, men's cross country and men's golf. Coastal's women's tennis and women's indoor and outdoor track & field posted the second-best APR score in the Big South, while volleyball tied for third.
"I am very excited all 17 of our athletic programs exceeded the national benchmark of 925," said Coastal Carolina University Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek. "Obviously, the primary reason for our student-athletes to be at Coastal Carolina University is to achieve academic success and graduate, gaining the necessary skills to thrive after college. We take that premise very seriously and placed an emphasis on developing `Champions for Life' in our mission statement to keep our student-athletes' progress and success at the forefront of everything we do as a department on a daily basis."
The APR is calculated by allocating points for academic eligibility and retention of student-athletes on athletic scholarships. A team's APR score is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible and multiplied by 1,000.
