STATESBORO, Ga.- Coastal Carolina women's soccer fell to the Eagles of Georgia Southern 1-0 in a Sunday matinee. The loss breaks a two game win streak and drops the Chants to 4-5-0 on the season. With the win Georgia Southern improves to 3-4-0.
Coastal was once again on a steady attack in the first half of the contest as the Chants were able to record six corner kicks and shots by Kate Wilkinson, Christina Stern, Julia Baldwin in the period. Although the offensive pressure was there, the Chanticleers were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
The Chanticleers were able to withstand a barrage of Georgia Southern shots in the final three minutes of the first half to take a 0-0 tie into half time. Of the six shots taken by the Eagles in the frame, five were in the final three minutes. Coastal keeper, Jessica Barton, recorded both of her saves on the day during the Georgia Southern offensive onslaught.
Senior leader Anna Tupy started to pressure the Georgia Southern defense early in the second half as she fired Coastal's first of four shots in the half during 50th minute. The shot was followed 58 seconds later by a shot off the foot of Maggie McGavin, however, both shots were gobbled up by Georgia Southern's Missy Meyer to preserve a scoreless game.
Georgia Southern finally broke the scoreless tie at the 63:07 mark of the contest. Forward Sara Oland fired a shot that deflected off of Barton before it finally came to rest in the back of the net. The goal was Oland's fourth on the season.
Coastal continued to battle through the half and had shots from Morgan Thomas and Wilkinson that were blocked by the Georgia Southern keeper in the final minutes of the match.
The Chants finished the day with seven shots (three of which were on goal), six corner kicks, and four saves.
The Chanticleers will the next 13 days to off before they open both their home and Big South Conference season against the defending Big South champion High Point Panthers. The match is set for Saturday, October 2 at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. Kick off will be at 6 p.m.
