Volleyball Drops Tough 3-2 Match to UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team dropped a grueling 3-2 (25-14, 23-25, 26-24, 21-25, 11-15) match to Big South rival UNC Asheville Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Justice Center. It was the first five-set match the Chanticleers have lost this season, winning the previous two. Coastal falls to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Big South while the Bulldogs improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Senior Chelsy Kimes went into the match needing just 21 kills to become the all-time leader in kills at Coastal Carolina and finished the match with a season-high 25 kills. She surpassed Katherine Jensen-Spencer as the all-time leader in the fourth set.

Senior Amanda Russell tied her season-high kill mark with 11 while Megan Bickford added 10 kills and eight blocks. Defensively, freshman Lindsay Gill tallied 24 digs and Kimes added a season-high 18 digs. Lauren Alejo dished out a career-high 38 assists while Kelsie Mauck had three service aces.

In the first set, Coastal went out to an early 6-1 lead and held the lead throughout the entire set. The Bulldogs came two within one at 8-7, but the Chanticleers went on a 10-5 run to put the set out of reach at 18-12. UNC Asheville was held to just two more points as Coastal won the first set 25-14. Kimes led the team with five kills and Erika Lightsey posted two blocks in the set.

Both teams stayed close early in the second set, forcing eight ties and two lead changes. With the set tied at 20-all, the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run, but it was not enough as the Chants came back to tie the set up again at 23-all. UNC Asheville took the final two points of the set with kills from Cindi Miller and Jenna Dover.

With the match tied at 1-1, the Chanticleers came out on the attack in the third set. Coastal took an 11-4 lead early, but UNC Asheville did not go away easy and gradually came back to tie the set at 19-all, forcing Coastal to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Chants regained the lead, winning the set on a 7-5 run.

In the fourth set, Coastal went out to a 4-1 lead and held the lead until 10-all when the UNC Asheville offense came alive and went on a 5-1 run. The Chants tried to build a comeback and came to within one point seven times but could not regain the lead, allowing the Bulldogs to win the set. Kimes registered eight kills in the set and became the all-time leader in kills at Coastal Carolina.

In the deciding set, the Chants led early at 3-1, but three ties kept the set close. At 7-7, UNC Asheville went on a 5-2 run making it hard for Coastal to recover. The Bulldogs won the match 3-2 and handed the Chanticleers their first conference loss of the season.

Coastal returns home to Kimbel Arena and steps out of conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 28 to take on UNC Wilmington at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs will also play on Tuesday, traveling to Mercer for a 6 p.m. match.
