Coastal Attains 3-0 Win over The Citadel

Charleston, SC - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened strong against The Citadel on Tuesday, Oct. 25 and would not look back, sweeping the Bulldogs in three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17. Coastal improved to 10-16 overall, while they remained at 3-6 in the Big South.

The Chanticleers scored the first four points of the match and would build a six point lead before The Citadel was able to score five straight points and pull within one of Coastal at a score of 8-7. Following a short lead by the Bulldogs at 13-12, the Chants went on a 5-1 run to regain the lead at 17-14. Coastal held onto the lead and scored the final five points of the set, which concluded with a service ace by freshman Lian Bernett, to take the 25-19 win.

Sophomore Kindra Bailey scored three of the Chanticleers first six points of the second set to help provide the early 6-1 lead. The closest The Citadel would come within Coastal during the second set was two points following a kill by Rachael Farrell to put the score at 8-6. Coastal built up an eight point lead on two separate occasions and eventually took the set by a final score of 25-20.

The Citadel did not let the Chants start the third set like they had the previous two sets, as three ties occurred in the early part of the set with the third coming at 6-6. Coastal then used an 8-1 run to build up a seven point lead. The Chants went ahead by as many as 11 points, before closing out the set on an attack error by the Bulldogs to win 25-17.

Senior Erika Lightsey recorded a team high 12 kills, while Bernett finished with 10 kills and a match-high four service aces. Sophomore Lindsay Gill finished the match with 13 digs and Bailey tallied five total blocks. Leading the team in assists on the night was sophomore Sam Skryd with 35.

Kaona Mercer paced the Bulldogs with 11 kills. She also had a .250 attacking percentage, one service ace and four blocks. Ise d'Angelo posted 13 digs and Alexa Dahlstrom registered 11 assists.

Coastal held the 41-30 advantage in kills and enumerated six more blocks than the Bulldogs did during the match. The Chanticleers also led 12-1 in service aces.

The Chanticleers return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. when they host Big South opponent Winthrop in the Chants annual DIG PINK match. Admission is free to the event and a silent auction will take place with the proceeds going to the Side Out Foundation, as well as to Caring in Our Lifetime.
