ELON, N.C. - Leo Christofides and John Karle each won their opening round matches in day one of the Elon Invitaional Friday night.
Christofides, competing in the the A2 singles flight defeated A. Garrido of Georgia Southern 6-4, 6-1 advancing to the quarterfinals where he will face J. Kaufman of Elon on Saturday.
After dropping the first set to W. Kent of UNC Greensboro 3-6, Karle recovered to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 advancing to face A. Rodriguez from Old Dominion in the B2 bracket on Saturday.
Yuskuke Kusuda was knocked off in the first round by Campbell's F. Guillen in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in the A1 singles flight.
The all day competition will continue Saturday.
