ATLANTA, Ga. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team won its third straight match and improved to 3-0 overall following a 5-2 victory over Mercer Thursday afternoon.
The Chants jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point despite falling in the first match. Mercer's duo of Guilherme Frias and David Barton turned in an 8-4 win over Dorian Sovic and Yusuke Kusuda before the Chants responded by winning the next two matches to take the point.
Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham downed Pierre Tefelski and Peter Tauchner 8-6 in the following match, while Alex Funkhouser and Danny Heidecker clinched the point for Coastal with an 8-6 win over Fernando Armendaris and Evandro Rosindo.
Sovic put the Chants ahead 2-1 and won his third singles match of the season following his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rosindo at No. 4. Kusuda gave Coastal a 3-1 lead after winning 6-3, 6-2 over Armendaris at No. 3.
Mercer cut the Coastal lead in half and earned a point for the Bears after downing Funkhouser 6-3, 7-6 at the fifth position. Heidecker, however, clinched the match for the Chants with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tefelski at No. 1.
Gordon won 6-2, 6-4 over Tauchner at No. 2 and improved to 2-0 this season.
"Mercer gets stronger every year under coach Woolfolk," Coastal Carolina head coach Chris Powers said. "They played us very tough. We were fortunate to escape with the doubles point to get the momentum going into singles. We still have work to do, and I know our best tennis as a team is still ahead."
Coastal returns to action Friday at 11 a.m. when the Chants travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on USC Upstate.
