Chants Win Title At UCF Challenge

SORRENTO, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team captured the overall team title Tuesday afternoon at the UCF Challenge from the RedTail Golf Club.

The Chanticleers finished with an overall score of 867 (285-289-293) and ended the three-day tournament three strokes over par on the par-72, 6,319-yard course. Tulane came in second place after shooting an 868 (284-295-289) and finished one stroke behind the Chants.

Minnesota (288-295-286=869), Kentucky (287-295-299=881) and South Carolina (294-284-304=882) rounded out the top-5.

Sophomore Jessica Alexander finished in fourth place and was four strokes under par and carded an overall score of 212. Alexander opened the tournament with a career-low 66 in round one and birdied six holes and shot six-under par. The Riverview, Fla., native followed with five birdies in round two and finished with a score of 69 before ending the tournament with a 77 in round three.

Junior Kaitlin Higginbotham placed second for the Chants and 15th overall after turning in a score of 218. The Norman, Okla., native birdied two holes on Tuesday en route to a 73 and a two-under par finish. Higginbotham was in 24th place on Sunday after shooting a 73 in the opening round before moving up 10 spots following her career-low 72 on Monday in round two.

Sophomore Brittany Henderson tied for 20th and was third for Coastal Carolina with her score of 220. Henderson opened the event by carding a 76, but responded with career-low rounds of 72 on the final two days. Henderson was tied for 60th overall after the first day, but improved her position by 31 spots after recording birdies on five holes in round two. She moved up nine spots in round three after a steady performance that saw her feature two birdies and an even par on 14 other holes.

Freshman Courtney Boe continued her rise up the leader board and finished tied for 28th place overall after tying her career-best with a one-under par 71 on Tuesday. Boe birdied three holes and made par on 13 others to become the fourth Chanticleer to finish in the top-30. The Bluffton, S.C., native ended round one tied for 68th after carding a 77, but shot moved up 14 spots with a 76 in round two before improving 26 spots on Tuesday to finish with an overall score of 224.

Senior Alicia Grier tied for 44th overall with an overall score of 227. Grier turned in three birdies and finished two strokes under par with a 70 in round one. She shot a 79 in the second round and completed the tournament with a 78 on Tuesday in round three.

Coastal Carolina returns to action Feb. 27-March 1 when the Chanticleers travel to Valdosta, Ga., to take part in the Kinderlou Forrest Challenge.
