CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team opened the Coastal Carolina Invitational by defeating Boston College 6-2 in game one and Rhode Island 4-0 in the night cap Feb. 25. The Chanticleers improve to 7-4 on the season.
In the first game of the day, the Chanticleers got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Freshman Brooke Donovan led off with a double down the right field line and stole third to give Coastal a runner in scoring position with one out. Sophomore Jazmin Daigle brought Donovan home on a single to left center and junior Chelsea Pineda drew a walk with two outs. Junior Stacy Snellings followed with a double to left center, scoring Daigle to give Coastal a 2-0 lead.
The Chants added another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After two quick outs, Donovan singled to centerfield and then stole second before junior Sarah Maples singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw home as Donovan scored.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cacia Pierre doubled to left field to start the inning. Freshman Beth Kassuhn came in to pinch run and freshman Jessie Winans brought her home with a single through the right side, giving the Chanticleers a 4-0 lead.
Coastal scored its last two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Maples drew a walk with one out and Daigle singled to centerfield, putting runners at first and second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Pineda drove them both in on a single to right field, giving the Chants a 6-0 lead.
Boston College finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as Alana Dimaso hit a two-run homer to left field, cutting the Chanticleer lead to four at 6-2.
Ashley Bagwell got her fifth start of the season and pitched her fourth complete game. She allowed two runs on three hits and had a career-high eight strikeouts in the win. Bagwell improves to 5-1 on the season.
In the second game of the day for the Chanticleers, Snellings starting things off with a homerun over the centerfield fence in the fourth inning with two outs to put Coastal on the board. Winans followed with a triple, her second of the season, down the right field line and Michelle Evans brought her across the plate on a hit to right field, giving the Chants a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Donovan led off with walk and Maples advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Daigle grounded out to first, but sent Donovan to third. Pierre cleared the bases with a dinger down the right field line to put Coastal up 4-0.
Evans earned her first start of the season in the circle, allowing no runs on two hits in 4.0 innings pitched. She registered her first win of the season. Senior Katelin Edwards came in to pitch in relief in the fifth inning, giving up no runs on three hits and striking out five.
The Coastal offense finished the day with 10 runs on 20 hits with Donovan recording multiple hits in both games. Pierre, Snellings and Winans joined Donovan by getting at least one hit in both games.
The Chanticleers return to the field tomorrow for day two of the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Coastal will face Boston College at 3:30 p.m. and Virginia Tech at 5:30 p.m.
