CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team fell 9-0 in six innings to South Carolina on Tuesday, March 22 at the CCU Softball Field. The Chanticleers drop to 14-13 on the season while the Gamecocks improve to 17-12 overall.
Freshman Brooke Donovan and junior Chelsea Pineda provided all four hits for Coastal as Donovan went 2-for-2 and Pineda went 2-for-3 at the plate, including her second double of the season.
South Carolina started things off in the top of the first with Lauren Lackey's single to third base. Lackey then stole second and ran home on Kaitlin Westfall's single for a 1-0 lead.
The Chants tried to even the score in the bottom of the first after Donovan drew a lead-off walk. Sarah Maples reached on a fielder's choice and Pineda loaded the bases with a single to third base, but Coastal ended the inning leaving all three runners stranded.
The Gamecocks added three more runs in the top of third after two Coastal throwing errors and a double by Laura Mendes, increasing the lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Gamecocks scored two more runs on a triple down the left field line by Dana Hathorne, bringing Evan Childs and Samie Garcia home to give South Carolina a 6-0 lead.
Coastal tried to get a two-out rally started in the bottom of the fourth after both Jazmin Daigle and Stacy Snellings drew walks. However, it was not enough as South Carolina ended the inning with a fielder's choice.
South Carolina finished things off scoring the final three runs in the top of the sixth after two Coastal fielding errors, ending the game with a score of 9-0.
South Carolina's Ashley Chastain pitched a six-inning complete game, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out one. She improves to 3-1 on the season.
Senior Michelle Evans took the loss for the Chanticleers, evening her record to 4-4. She allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out two Gamecocks. Freshman Ashley Bagwell pitched in relief for Evans in the top of the fifth inning and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two.
Coastal Carolina will head to California for the Stanford Invitational March 25-27, hosted by #10/13 Stanford.
