STANFORD, Calif. - After being rained out on Saturday, the Coastal Carolina University softball team dropped both games on the final day of the Stanford Invitational, falling 3-1 in the first game against Sacramento State and 10-0 to Stanford in game two. The Chanticleers fall to 14-17 on the season.
In the first game, Sacramento State got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Alyssa Nakken led off with a double to left field and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Emily McCormick.
The Hornets added another run in the second after Coastal loaded the bases and walked in Molly Smith for a 2-0 lead.
The Chanticleers cut the Hornet's lead to one, scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Chelsea Pineda led off the inning with a single to third base, but was called out after senior Michelle Evans hit into a double play for two quick outs. Cacia Pierre kept the inning alive after singling through the right side. Senior Ashley Pisone came in to pinch run for Pierre and stole second before she was brought home on a double to left field by sophomore Jazmin Daigle.
Sacramento State brought in its third run of the game in the sixth inning. Paige Martin was sent home after Devin Caldwell singled through the right side to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.
With the final inning left to play, Daigle led off the seventh with a single through the right side and freshman Beth Kassuhn came in to pinch run. With one out, sophomore Olivia Piccirillo was hit by a pitch to give the Chants two runners on base and both advanced on a fly out, putting runners at second and third. The rally was stopped short as Coastal ended the inning, falling 3-1.
Senior Michelle Evans threw a complete game for Coastal, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits, but falls to 4-6 on the season.
Megan Schaefer earned the win for Sacramento State after allowing one run on four hits while striking out four.
In game two, Stanford got out to an early 8-0 lead led by Ashley Hansen's two doubles and three RBI in the first inning. Seven different Cardinal recorded hits in the first, including three doubles in the inning.
The Cardinal added one run in both the second and third innings to end the game early after Stanford went out to a 10-0 lead.
The Coastal offense could not get started against Stanford as Ashley Chinn threw a perfect game while striking out four Chants. Chinn improves to 10-0 on the season while freshman Ashley Bagwell got the loss for Coastal, falling to 7-7 on the season. Bagwell got the start in the circle, allowing eight runs, none earned, on seven hits. Senior Katelin Edwards came in to pitch in relief, throwing 3.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
The Chanticleers open Big South Conference play on Wednesday, March 30 in a doubleheader against Charleston Southern. The first game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
