Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Georgetown

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team swept Georgetown on Wednesday, March 9, defeating the Hoyas 4-1 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The Chanticleers improve to 14-6 overall on the season while Georgetown falls to 3-15.

In the first game, Coastal was first to strike, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, junior Sarah Maples reached first on a fielding error at second and sophomore Jazmin Daigle followed with a single to left center, sending Maples to third. Sophomore Cacia Pierre brought Maples home on a groundout at second base to give the Chanticleers an early 1-0 lead.

Georgetown tied the game up in the top of the second after Cara Savarese led off with a double. Savarese stole third to give the Hoyas a runner in scoring position and she scored on a fielding error at third, tying the game at 1-all.

Coastal added two more in the second inning as junior Chelsea Pineda drew a walk with one out and senior Michelle Evans cleared the bases with her first homerun of the season over the left field fence.

With a 3-1 lead, the Chants added an insurance run in the third as Maples had a lead-off single up the middle to start the inning. Maples stole second and advanced to third on a dropped third strike and came home on a throwing error to give Coastal a 4-1 lead.

Freshman Ashley Bagwell got the start in the circle for the Chants, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six. Bagwell improves to 7-3 on the season to lead the Big South.

Melissa Conners started in the circle for the Hoyas and pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four. Conners falls to 0-5 on the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Coastal took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Brooke Donovan drew a lead off walk and Maples advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pierre reached first on a fielding error at second, sending Donovan to third. Junior Stacy Snellings cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field, giving the Chants a 3-0 lead.

The Chanticleers added another run in the bottom of the third as Donovan led off the inning by reaching first on a fielding error at shortstop. Freshman Courtney Howell came in to pinch run for Donovan and Maples put runners in the corners after reaching first on a throwing error by the catcher on a sacrifice bunt. Daigle brought Howell home on a sacrifice fly to give Coastal a 4-0 lead.

Georgetown cut the lead to three as the Hoyas scored one run in the top of the fifth. Callie Eward singled to third base with one out and Eward advanced to second on a ground out. Alexandria Anttila drove in the run on a single to left field for a 4-1 Chant lead.

Coastal answered back, scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Nicole Saggiomo led off with a single to second base, but was caught stealing for the first out of the inning. With two outs, Maples singled to left center and stole second before Daigle brought her home with a singled through the left side for a 5-1 lead.

Evans pitched her second complete game of the season for the Chanticleers, allowing one run on six hits and striking out a career-high seven batters in 7.0 innings pitched. Evans moves to 4-0 on the season in the circle.

Mackensey Carter started in the circle for the Hoyas and pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on four hits while striking out five to fall to 3-7 on the season.

The Chanticleers have a weekend off before returning to the field to host the Chanticleer Challenge March 18-20.
