Women's Tennis Falls To Winthrop In Big South Finals

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to top-seeded Winthrop in the Big South Championships final match Saturday afternoon from the Memorial Courts on the Winthrop campus.
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Elizaveta Zaytseva and Andressa Garcia posted an 8-6 win over senior Caitlyn Brooksbank and freshman Kourtney Kowal at the No. 3 position before Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli clinched the point with an 8-5 win over juniors Miki Bunea and Diana Mortlock at No. 2.
Alkema put the Eagles up 2-0 when she bested Lexi Bolesky 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Herrera gave Winthrop a 3-0 advantage following a 7-6, 6-0 win over Kowal at No. 3, but Bunea tallied a point for the Chants thereafter after she defeated Zaytseva 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.
Garcia, however, sealed the win for Winthrop when she downed Mortlock 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
