CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team will embark on its eighth consecutive NCAA Regional on Thursday, playing in the NCAA East-Virginia Tech Regional May 19-21 at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech in Radford, Va.
The Chanticleers will be paired with UNC Wilmington and Lamar in the opening round and begin play on hole #10 at 9:10 am. Coastal Carolina's lineup will include Tripp McAllister, Sebastian Soderberg, Roberto Ballesteros, Drew Ernst and Charlie Winegardner.
"The course is great and our guys are in good form," said CCU Director of Golf Allen Terrell. "This is one of the bigger courses you will play in postseason, being 7,500 yards, and with the amount of rain they have had over the past couple of days will make it play long too. However, that will actually make the course easier in some ways. It will take a little less strategy because if you hit the fairways, it will stay there. You just have to keep the ball in front of you. The key to this course will be your approach shots and giving yourself a par putt on each hole.
"The teams that are successful will be those that are discipline, not necessarily the ones that are most talented. You are going to have the highest level of patience to play this week and advance. You have to be mentally prepared to take a bogey. Golf is a competitive sport and this week will be about competing. You cannot force shots and you cannot let your score determine your next shot selection.
"Physically, this team has been prepared since day one. I feel good that we will also be prepared mentally this week. We will have just as good of a chance to advance as anyone here."
The Virginia Tech Regional will consist of 13 teams with the top five teams after 54 holes advancing to the NCAA Championships. The Virginia Tech Regional also features eight team ranked inside the Golfstat Top 50, including #4 Georgia Tech, #10 LSU, #16 Duke, #21 Virginia, #28 Oklahoma, #33 Kent State, #40 Virginia Tech and #46 Mississippi. Coastal Carolina is ranked 62nd.
In the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, this field includes 12 teams ranked among the Top 70 including, #2 Georgia Tech, #8 LSU, #16 Duke, #17 Virginia, #33 Kent State, #35 East Carolina, #42 Virginia Tech, #49 UNC Wilmington, #57 Mississippi, #61 Coastal Carolina and #69 Lamar.
This season, Coastal Carolina posted a team scoring average of 294.34, sixth-best on the school's single-season to 10 list. The Chants played in 12 tournaments in 2010-11, finishing among the top 10 11 times with three top five finishes. McAllister leads the team with a 73.97 season scoring average. He shot a one-under 212 and tied for 35th at the 2008 NCAA East Regional before tying for 60th at the 2009 Northeast Regional.
Soderberg, a two-time All-Big South honoree, averages 74.00 strokes per round and placed seventh at this year's Big South Championship. He tied for 68th at the 2010 NCAA East Regional.
Ernst and Winegardner also have NCAA Regional experience. Ernst tied for 11th, carding a +8 for 54 holes, at the 2009 Northeast Regional and was +7 for three rounds in the 2010 NCAA East Regional to tie for 30th. Winegardner tied for 68th in the 2010 NCAA East Regional.
