Chanticleers Downed at North Florida

Aug. 21, 2011

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team played its second game in three days as part of the season opening North Florida Tournament. Sunday's match saw North Florida top the Chanticleers, 5-0.

Similar to how Friday's game against Jacksonville, head coach Paul Hogan used a lineup that was a mixture of both experienced upperclassmen and true freshmen.

For most of the first half Coastal held the Ospreys in check, the Chants only defensive breakdown came as North Florida's Michele Larrinaga found Lauren Irurzun for a perfectly placed header to account for the 1-0 halftime score. Coastal freshman Jamie King nearly found the equalizer in the 39th minute, but her shot attempt sailed just wide of the goal.

Coastal had numerous opportunities to cut into the North Florida lead in the second half as the Chants fired seven shots and earned four corners in the period. Despite being down late in the game, Coastal continued to apply pressure on the Ospreys defense. The Chants ripped off six shots in the final 13 minutes forcing the North Florida keeper to make several impressive saves.

"We played well in the first half and that reflected on the scoreboard at halftime," said Hogan. "In the second half we had opportunities to score, but mental errors and poor execution kept us from taking advantage of those opportunities."

Goalkeeper Saundra Baron recorded four saves in the contest while facing 15 shots.

The Chanticleers attempted 11 shots in the match, including five shots on frame. Freshmen Shelby Evans and Rylie Johnson each tallied two shots on goal while Cami Skladany fired one.

Coastal will make its debut in front of the home fans on Saturday, Aug. 27 as the hosts to Georgia Southern. The match, the first of a doubleheader with the men's program, is slated to kickoff at 5 p.m.
