CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team played Georgia Southern to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, Aug. 28 at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
The tie moves both the Chanticleers and Eagles to identical 0-2-1 marks on the season.
Georgia Southern struck first in the contest as Courtney Collins found the back of the Chanticleer net. Collins was able to control a rebound in the box after a spectacular save on a direct kick by Coastal's Saundra Baron. She then fired to the far right post to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage at the 56:20 mark of play.
After the goal the Chants would regain their composure and apply steady pressure on the Eagles' backline. With 13 minutes to play in regulation Ashley Day lofted a shot over the Georgia Southern keeper for what appeared to be the equalizer. However, a foul on Coastal before the shot attempt nullified the goal. Sophomore Cisca Okoko nearly tied the match with just under four minutes to play. Okoko received a cross played by Maddie Phillips to the right side of the goal box, but was unable to push her sliding shot attempt past the Eagles' keeper.
With time winding down in regulation the Chants mounted one final run. Okoko received a pass and streaked down the right flank, she then played a cross into the box where Alyssa Clark was waiting with a swift shot attempt. Clark's initial shot was block by the Eagles' keeper, but she would corral the loose ball and uncork a blast to the lower right side of the net to tie the game with 24 second remaining. Clark's goal was the second of her career.
In the first overtime, the Chanticleer pushed the ball forward in a hurry. Twenty-five seconds in to the period Morgan Thomas ripped her lone shot attempt of the match just wide of the goal. Neither team was able to gain an advantage throughout the remainder of the overtime.
In the early going of the second overtime session, the teams traded possession with neither able to secure a shot attempt. The Chanticleers would receive their best scoring chance of the frame off the foot of freshman Rylie Johnson. Johnson ripped a shot in the 103 minute of play from the right side of the 18-yard box that forced the Georgia Southern keeper to convert her third save of the day.
The first half of play saw the Eagles dictate play early before the Chants were able to settle and counterattack. Georgia Southern nearly took an early lead in the 34th minute as Baron was forced out of the net to deflect a shot. Baron was unable to hang on to the ball leaving an open net for Georgia Sothern's Sydnie Van Curen. Van Curen fired a shot towards the net, but Coastal's Cami Skladany was there to deflect the ball harmlessly away. The Chants would pressure the Eagles' defensive third in the final minutes of the half earning three corners in the last two minutes of play before halftime.
Coastal finished the game with a 7-4 advantage in corners, while Georgia Southern held the edge in shots by a 13-9 count. Both team registered four shots on goal and three saves.
Coastal Carolina will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 2 against Valparaiso at the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
