LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to Valparaiso, 1-0, in the first game of the Liberty Invitational on Friday, Sept. 2.
The defeat moves the Chants to 0-3-1 on the season, while the win boasts Valparaiso to a 2-2 record.
Valpo's Janine Lytle scored the only goal of the contest in the 17th minute of play. Catherine Terrell assisted on the goal as she lofted a free kick into the box where Lytle would tap it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Through the first fifteen minutes of the match the Chanticleers attacked the Crusader defense tallying two of their five first half shot attempts. After Valpo scored, the Chants regrouped and continued to press forward resulting in an Ashley Day shot on goal in the 22nd minute that forced Valpo's Kristen Phillips to make a diving save to preserve the lead heading into the half.
Coastal looked as though they would break through in the opening minutes of the second half. The Chants recorded shot attempts by Chelsea Strange and Meghan Long and a corner kick in the first five minutes of the period. The Chants would attempt four more shots through the remainder of the game, but none would fall on frame.
Coastal's Saundra Baron recorded four saves in the contest bringing her season total to 16. Of Baron's four saves, three came in the final two minutes of play against a flurry of Crusader shot attempts.
The Chanticleers will wrap up the Liberty Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Noon against Brown.
