Norfolk State Final Stats / North Carolina A&T Final Stats

Davidson, N.C. - Coastal collected two wins on Saturday, Sept. 17 by beating Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T each by a score of 3-0 at the Davidson Tournament. The event started on Friday at the John M. Belk Arena.

Coastal 3, Norfolk State 0

Coastal Carolina returned to the win column on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a 3-0 victory over Norfolk State in the Chanticleer's second match of the Davidson Tournament.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first set, but Coastal responded with a 3-0 run.

The Chanticleers used a 5-1 run to build a 12-9 lead. Coastal was able to hold the advantage until the set was tied at18-18 on an attack error by the Chanticleers.

Coastal closed the first set by scoring the final five points to win 25-21 and go ahead 1-0 in the match.

During the second set the Spartans would get out to a 6-1 lead. Freshman Lian Bernett tied the score for the first time at 8-8 on a kill with the assist going to sophomore Sam Skryd. Norfolk State regained the lead on the ensuing possession and would hold the lead until sophomore Kindra Bailey recorded a kill on another assist by Skryd to tie the score at 12-12. Freshman Katie Martin recorded a service ace to put the Chanticleers ahead by a score of 13-12. Norfolk State tied the match up at 13-13, but Coastal went on to score the next four points and eventually took the set by a final of 25-18.

Norfolk State again jumped out to an early lead in the third set going ahead 5-1. The Spartans built their largest lead at 13-6. Coastal made a run at the Spartans by scoring the next seven points to tie the set at 13-13. The Spartans would regain the lead following the tie and built a four point advantage going up 21-17.

Coastal tied the game at 21-21 following two points by Bernett, one by Bailey and an attack error by the Spartans. The two teams would go back and forth until Martin recorded a kill and two blocks, one involving a block assist by Skryd. Norfolk State committed an error to give Coastal the 26-24 win.

Bernett finished the match with 13 kills and an attacking percentage of .344 to lead the Chanticleers. She also had two service aces, along with Skryd who also had 32 assists. Sophomore Lindsay Gill posted 10 digs and Martin recorded six blocks.

Leading the Spartans was Charlotte Armstead with10 kills and three blocks. Adriana Ramos had two service aces and Kristen Burt finished with 20 assists.

Coastal Carolina 3, North Carolina A&T 0

North Carolina A&T held two early leads in the first set, but Coastal built a six point lead at 10-4. Tatiana Cooper recorded a kill on an assist from Chelsea Fox to put the Aggies within five, but the Chanticleers went on to score nine straight points to extend their lead to 14. Coastal took the first set 25-10, which was the largest margin of the set.

The Aggies again took the early lead in the second set, going ahead 2-0. Coastal tied the match on a kill by sophomore Meghan Laffin and an attack error by the Aggies. North Carolina A&T regained the lead at 3-2 on a kill by Jenea Daniels, but the Chanticleers tied the set for the second time at 3-3 on a kill by Laffin. The set would see three more ties before Coastal was able to go on a 7-1 run to take the 15-9 advantage. Coastal used a few more runs to take the second set 25-16.

During the third set the Chanticleers would go on a 12-0 run after the match was tied 1-1. Coastal would not look back from that point on as they took the set by a score of 25-16.

Martin had both a team season high and a personal career high six service aces in the win over the Aggies. She also finished the match with two blocks, along with fellow classmate Taylor Stafford. Laffin had a team high 15 kills and an attacking percentage of .667. Skryd finished the match with 30 assists and sophomore Lauren Alejo recorded nine digs.

Jenea Daniels led North Carolina A&T with five kills, while Devonte' Reese recorded two service aces, Cooper had nine digs and Fox finished with 11 assists.

Bernett and Gill were named to the all-tournament team for their play over the two day period.

Coastal will open up conference play in their next match when they travel to Clinton, S.C. to play Presbyterian College on Friday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m.
