Coastal Suffers 3-1 Conference Loss to Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. - Playing in their first Big South Conference match of the season the Coastal Carolina volleyball team fell to Presbyterian by a score of 3-1 on Friday, September 23. The Chanticleers are now 6-9 on the season and 0-1 in the Big South.
Coastal opened the first set by building up a 5-3 lead. Presbyterian tied the match at 6-6 on a kill by Kelly Berryman, but the Chanticleers regained the lead on the ensuing point, as the Blue Hose recorded a service error.
Presbyterian grabbed their first lead of the set on a kill by Allison Brown, who gave the Blue Hose the 11-10 advantage. The Blue Hose held the lead for the remainder of the set as they went on to win 25-16.
The Chanticleers were able to regroup and came out strong in the second set taking an early 6-2 lead. Coastal extended their lead to seven on a service ace by sophomore Lindsay Gill, who put the score at 11-4. Presbyterian was unable to make a run at the Chanticleers and Coastal would tie the match up at 1-1 by taking the second set 25-14.
Presbyterian opened the third set by going on a 6-0 run. Coastal pulled within four on a kill by freshman Lian Bernett, putting the score at 10-6. The Chanticleers were unable to get any closer to the Blue Hose, as Presbyterian took the third set 25-18 and the 2-1 lead in the match.
During the fourth set, the score would remain close until Presbyterian used a 5-1 run midway through the set and a late 4-1 run to pull away and win 25-18.
Bernett and sophomore Meghan Laffin each had nine kills for the Chanticleers, while Lindsay Gill recorded 14 digs. Freshman Katie Martin posted a team high four blocks and sophomore Sam Skryd finished with 28 assists.
Leading the way for Presbyterian was Presley Mabrey with 12 kills, Mary Trimpe grabbed 17 digs, Kelly Berryman had five blocks and Ashtin Frank finished with 38 assists.
Coastal will look to earn their first Big South Conference win of the season on Saturday, September 24 when they face Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. at 2:00 p.m.
