Coastal Men's Golf Heads to Duke

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's golf program will play its second event of 2011-12, traveling to Durham, N.C., to play in Duke's Rod Myers Invitational Oct. 2-3. The 54-hole event (36 holes Sunday and 18 Monday) will be played at the Duke University Golf Club (par 72 - 7,136 yards).
The Rod Myers Invitational field includes host and eighth-ranked Duke and 19th-ranked Iowa as well as Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, Georgia Southern, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee and Tulsa.
This will be the sixth time Coastal Carolina has participated in Duke's fall tournament and first since 2006. The Chants have won the event once (2006) and finished runner-up once (2005), thanks to two medalist finishes by Dustin Johnson in 2005 and '06. In 2005, Johnson fired three 67's to win by seven strokes as the Chants came up one stroke shy of the team title. In 2006, Coastal blew away the field with a 13-under par 851, winning by 13 strokes. Johnson carded rounds of 69-68-70 for a 207 to win by one stroke. The other four Chants - Zack Byrd, Moises Cobo, Sam Lyons and Dan Obremski- each finished within the top 11 with the team combining to shoot eight-under in the final round.
Coastal Carolina is coming off a seventh-place finish in its first event, Air Force's Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. The Chants were led by Sebastian Soderberg, who was later named Big South Men's Golfer of the Week for his three-under par 213. After an opening-round 75, he finished with rounds of 68-70. Roberto Ballesteros and Charlie Winegardner also posted at least one round under par at the event and will be joined by Kevin Vanden Heuvel and Peter Valasek.
