Final Stats

CONWAY - Three freshmen pitchers pitched 7.2 scoreless innings and Justin Creel's two-run single in the second inning proved to be enough as Coastal Carolina (9-6) posted a 5-1 victory over the College of Charleston (12-5) Wednesday afternoon at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.

Javier Reynoso (2-0) started and pitched 3.2 innings to get the win, coming out due to a predetermined pitch count limitation. He allowed two hits and three walks, while striking out four. Patrick Corbett entered the game in the fourth with two runners on base and, after a walk to load the bases, recorded a strikeout to end the inning. He would not allow a hit, walking just the one, and struck out two over 2.1 innings. Austin Kerr pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his first career save. The Chester, S.C., native retired all five batters he faced to get the save.

The Chants used a two-out rally to score three times in the second for a 3-0 lead. Tucker Frawley had a leadoff infield single, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Brian Pruett was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Jacob May plated Frawley with an RBI single as Pruett advanced to third on the play. May would steal second and Creel plated Pruett and May with a single through the right side of the infield.

In the third, Coastal once again scored with two outs. Alex Buccilli had a leadoff hit, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After two outs, Ted Blackman walked to put runners on the corners. Blackman would steal second and, on the throw down to second, Buccilli scored.

The Cougars, who only managed four hits, got on the board in the top of the seventh, scoring once to make the score 4-1. Cody Martin and Ryan Welke had back-to-back singles, the second putting Martin on third base. Bradley Goodson brought home Martin with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Coastal got that run back in the eighth, again scoring with two outs. Frawley drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on an Adam Eggnatz single. Then, with two outs, Pruett delivered an RBI single to right, putting the Chants up 5-1.

Creel and Rich Witten each had two hits and Frawley collected a hit with a walk. The three have now reached base safely in 12 straight games.

For the Cougars, Ryan West (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing six hits and four runs over six complete innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Coastal Carolina will host its fifth and final tournament of the 2012 season this weekend, welcoming Connecticut, Michigan and UAB.
