Coastal Carolina Baseball Retains Matt Schilling

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina head baseball coach Chris Lemonis has announced that longtime Chanticleer coach Matt Schilling will remain on staff as the program's Director of Defense, Baserunning and Gameplay.

Entering his 22nd season as a member of the Coastal Carolina baseball coaching staff, Schilling is the longest-tenured member of the program and brings more than two decades of experience in Conway as both a player and coach.

"Matt's connection to Coastal Carolina Baseball runs deep," Lemonis said. "Few people understand the history and expectations of this program better than he does. His experience and knowledge of our culture make him an invaluable part of what we're building. We're excited that he'll continue to play a major role in the future of Coastal Carolina Baseball."

A former Chanticleer standout, Schilling played at Coastal Carolina from 1993-94 before beginning his coaching career with the program as an assistant coach from 1995-2000. He returned to his alma mater in 2012 and has been a key figure in the program's success ever since.

During his time on staff, Schilling has been part of multiple conference championship teams and postseason runs, including Coastal Carolina's historic 2016 NCAA Division I National Championship. Most recently, he helped guide the Chanticleers to a record-setting 2025 campaign in which Coastal Carolina won a school-record 56 games, captured Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships, won the Conway Regional and Auburn Super Regional, and advanced to the Men's College World Series Championship Final.

Schilling's impact has been especially evident on the defensive side of the game. Throughout his tenure, Coastal Carolina has consistently ranked among the conference and national leaders in double plays turned while developing a reputation as one of the nation's most fundamentally sound defensive clubs.

"Coastal Carolina has always been home for me," Schilling said. "This program has meant so much to my family and me over the years, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the student-athletes who choose to come here. I'm excited to work alongside Coach Lemonis and our staff as we build on the tradition that makes Coastal Baseball special."

In addition to his work on the field, Schilling serves as director of the Chanticleer Baseball Camps and brings extensive player development experience from his 12 years as senior director of on-field instruction at Baseball Factory. He also spent three seasons as an associate scout with the Atlanta Braves organization.

A two-sport student-athlete at Coastal Carolina, Schilling earned first-team All-Big South honors as a second baseman in 1994 and was a nominee for the Rotary Smith Award. He was also a member of the Chanticleers' men's soccer team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1992 NCAA Tournament.
