Coastal has won two Regionals, but fell at the 2008 Cary Super Regional to North Carolina and dropped two, one-run games to eventual national champion South Carolina at the 2010 Myrtle Beach Super Regional.
Coastal has faced the Tigers twice before in Regional action. First, the Chants were the top seed and hosted the 2007 Myrtle Beach Regional with Clemson as the second seed. Clemson handed Coastal two losses, 11-8 and 15-3, to advance. Last season at the NCAA Clemson Regional after Coastal defeated second-seeded UConn, 13-1, Clemson defeated the Chants 12-7 in the second round.
Following the Chants game against Clemson No. 8 national seed and host South Carolina faces fourth-seeded Manhattan on at 4 p.m.
The two losers will play on Saturday at noon, while the two winners will play on Saturday at 4 p.m. The winner of the second game on Saturday will play in the championship round on Sunday at 4 p.m., while the loser of Saturday's second game will play the winner of Saturday's first game on Sunday at noon. If the unbeaten team loses on Sunday, the same two teams will play a game on Monday at 7 p.m. to determine the Regional champion.
The winner of the Columbia Regional will play the winner of the Charlottesville Regional between June 8-11. The four teams in that regional are No. 1-seeded Virginia, No. 2-seeded Oklahoma, No. 3-seeded Appalachian State, and No. 4-seeded Army.
