BOONE, N.C. - The 16th-ranked Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-2) scored on four of its first five drives and pulled away for a 55-14 victory over Coastal Carolina (2-3) Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Steven Miller led App with 202 rushing yards and two scores, while Jamal Jackson threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Sean Price was Jackson's top target, catching eight passes for 128 yards and two TDs. Overall, the Mountaineers racked up 684 of total offense compared to Coastal's 304.
Appalachian State took the opening kickoff and drove 64 yards in nine plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Jackson looked to be stopped on a run to the right, but he reversed field and out-ran the Coastal defense for a five-yard score.
ASU went up 14-0 on its third possession, scoring on a two-play, 97-yard drive. After an Austin Cain punt backed App State to its own three, Miller broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and picked up 28 yards to the 31. On the next play, Jackson found Price over the middle for a 71-yard touchdown pass.
The Mountaineers struck once again, using just 1:25 off the clock, as Jackson found Drew Bailey for a 23-yard score inside the final minute of the first quarter. App made it four scores in five drives, opening the second quarter with a five-play, 49-yard touchdown drive. Jackson had a 15-yard run to the three and Miller capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run for a 28-0 lead.
Coastal's offense got on track, using a hurry-up offense and a power running game. However, the score came on a swing pass from Aramis Hillary to Tyrell Blanks for a 20-yard score. Appalachian State answered back with a 25-yard field goal by Drew Stewart to make the score 31-7. Coastal's offense once again put together an impressive drive ending with Hillary finding David Duran in the end zone for a two-yard score. With 1:14 left in the half, the Mountaineers reached the CCU 13 before Stewart kicked a 30-yard field goal for a 34-14 lead.
Hillary finished the game with 145 passing yards, completing 15-of-30 passes, with two scores.
One play after a Coastal punt to start the third, Appalachian's Miller broke off left tackle and scored on a 75-yard run for a 41-14 lead.
The teams traded punts until late in the third quarter. ASU was pinned on its own 10 after Cain's 35-yard punt. The Mountaineers drove the ball 90 yards, taking 7:29 off the clock, to take a 48-14 lead. Jackson completed the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Price in the left corner of the end zone.
On the ensuing kickoff, Tre Henderson took the ball out of the end zone and returned it 87 yards to the ASU 13. It marked the longest kick return in CCU history (one yard better than Henderson's 86-yard return for a TD versus Gardner-Webb last season) and the longest non-scoring play in school history. However, the Chants were not able to take advantage due to a fumble two plays later.
App State tacked on a final touchdown with 2:28 left in the game, thanks to a 14-yard run by Michael Frazier, to provide the final margin, 55-14.
Coastal Carolina will have a bye week next weekend. The Chants return to action Oct. 13, hosting Stony Brook as part of Hall of Fame weekend.
