CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team will be looking to get even with Winthrop when the two teams meet in a quarterfinal game of the Big South Conference Championship Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rock Hill.
The fifth-seeded Chanticleers (10-8-1 overall) and fourth-seeded Eagles (11-5-1 overall) both went 7-4-0 in conference play during the regular season. However, Winthrop garnered the higher seed and homefield for Saturday's matchup by virtue of its 1-0 victory over Coastal on October 11.
The Chants outplayed the Eagles offensively in that game, outshooting them 17-7, including 8-2 in attempts on net, but Winthrop got the only goal with 1:53 left on the clock in the second half.
Coastal rebounded to win four of its last five matches, while Winthrop lost three of its final five, including the last two. The Eagles scored 40 goals during the season, tying for most among Big South teams, but only 19 of them came in league play and they were shutout by Charleston Southern and Presbyterian.
The Chanticleers totaled 36 goals, including a conference-best 27 against Big South opponents. They also set a program season-record with 10 shutouts and allowed just seven goals in conference games.
The two teams also met in the quarterfinals of last year's tournament, with Winthrop winning 3-0 at home.
Saturday's game will air live on the Big South Network. The winner advances to the semifinal round, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 at the CCU Soccer Field.
