CONWAY - De'Angelo Henderson had a 56-yard touchdown run and Alex Ross threw for two scores as the Coastal Carolina football team held its second scrimmage of the preseason - a two hour session - Wednesday at Brooks Stadium.
"The scrimmage may have appeared a little sloppy and unorganized, but that was a little by design," said head coach Joe Moglia. "We did no tackling, we did not play several established players that were battling even the smallest injury and wanted to evaluate some younger guys. I still feel good about where we are as a team. On the same note, I am anxious to watch this tape because, ideally, we would like to have a firm grasp on the depth chart by Monday (when classes begin)."
The offense only produced one first down in the first two possessions. Then, on the second play of the third possession, Henderson, facing the number one CCU defense, made one of his patented "hop" cuts to split two defenders and raced 56 yards untouched for a touchdown.
The offense kept the momentum on the next drive, converting a fourth and one and eventually getting a 42-yard field goal by Alex Catron.
On the ensuing possession, the defense forced a punt which John Israel blocked and Colton Blackburn recovered. On the next play, Ross hit Tyrell Blanks for a 15-yard touchdown. Two possessions later, the first offense put together the best drive of the day. Ross completed a 20-yard pass to Matt Hazel, had a 13-yard run and capped the drive with a 17-yard pass to Blanks for a TD.
The final two drives before the newcomers had a five-minute period resulted in two scores by the offense. First, Michael Church had a 20-yard run before the drive stalled at the two yards line. Ben Hinson came on to convert a 19-yard field goal. A pass interference call on the final drive setup a six-yard Brian Kass touchdown run.
