CONWAY - Sophomore middle blocker Annayka Legros of the Coastal Carolina volleyball team has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first weekly conference honor of Legros' career, and the first defensive honor awarded to a Chanticleer player this season.
Legros led the Chanticleers at the net last week, averaging 1.6 blocks per set and helping Coastal to a 3-0 record.
The Kennesaw, Ga., native matched her career-high in back-to-back matches, notching seven blocks against both Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville. The Chants defeated GWU in four sets and swept UNCA in three.
Legros began the week tallying two blocks against South Carolina as Coastal Carolina won its first-ever match against the Gamecocks with a 3-0 sweep.
Legros also chipped in offensively for the Chants, averaging 1.4 kills per set and accounting for 24.5 points.
For the season, Legros has totaled a career-high 54 blocks, is leading Coastal at 1.04 blocks per set, and has tallied five blocks or more in five matches this season. She has also set a career-high in kills with 93 to rank fifth on the team.
Last week's trio of wins improved Coastal's record to 18-5 overall, 7-2 in the Big South. The Chanticleers, currently second in the Big South, are 8-2 in their last 10 matches, and have won four of their last five matches against conference opponents.
Coastal plays its last regular-season road matches this weekend, facing fourth-place Winthrop (15-10, 5-4) on Friday at 7 pm, and sixth-place Presbyterian (9-12, 4-5) on Saturday at 2 pm. Winthrop is one of just two Big South teams to defeat Coastal this season. The Chants swept Presbyterian earlier this season at The HTC Center. Both matches can be seen on the Big South Network.
