Gardner-Webb Game Notes (vs Coastal Carolina) ![]()
Junior defensive tackle Leroy Cummings
When you look at Gardner-Webb's offense, what is it that stands out to you?
"With the offensive, I've noticed that their pass protection could be better. They have given up 25 sacks in five games and I feel like we can capitalize on that as a defensive unit."
As you move up a little in the rankings, do you just block that out of your heads?
"With the ranking situation, we don't really discuss it. We know we are (ranked), but we continue to practice and play like we're not. We always have to have a chip on our shoulders."
Senior offensive tackle Chad Hamilton
Coastal has the 4th fewest sacks in the country thus far. What have you done differently that has led to that?
"We have to give credit to Coach (Patrick) Covington. We have to protect our quarterback, wide receivers and running backs. That's the mindset we having going into every game. We block, use proper technique and do what we can to help our team."
Looking at tape, what have you seen from the Gardner-Webb defense?
"They like to load it up. As an offensive line, we have to keep our heads up, keep our heads on the swivel as tackles. We have to (read our keys) to see when the safety is spinning. That will all help us to execute our blocks."
Head Coach Joe Moglia
On John Israel
"John's been seeing a lot of action and has been a contributor across the board. He has had some outstanding plays for us and has good hands. If he is battling for a ball, there's a pretty good chance that he is coming down with it. He can break tackles and he's got pretty good speed. John's statistics were outstanding, but his contribution to us has been pretty consistent across the board. He had a great game because of the statistics, but he has made those types of contributions before. We can count on John."
On Gardner-Webb
"One of the things that I am aware of is that Gardner-Webb is undefeated at home. They have a very good home record. They have had a lot of injuries this year and I think that has hurt them. They are .500 overall. They've had some great games and they've had some games where they have been a little bit off. They have an offense that we have to reckon with. We are going to have to do our job in regards to blocking him. They will come with a lot of pressure to try to mix things up on us. They will probably blitz 25% of the time. They mix up their men in zones as far as coverage go. We know what our job is and we are working on that."
