CONWAY - For the first time in both Big South and Coastal Carolina histories, an athletics program has ascended to the top spot in a national poll as the Chanticleer football program is ranked #1 in this week's FCS Coaches poll, receiving 20 of a possible 26 first-place votes.
The Chanticleers also moved up one spot to #2 in The Sports Network national media poll, receiving 55 of a possible 157 first-place votes. Overall, Coastal received the second-most, first-place votes in the media poll and tallied 3,747 total points. The nation's new #1 - New Hampshire - received 70 first-place votes and a total of 3,800 points. Also receiving first-place votes were #3 Jacksonville State (13 first-place votes) and #4 North Dakota State (19 first-place votes).
(Note: The 2010 Coastal Carolina baseball team held down the #1 spot in the NCAA RPI rankings for several weeks before finishing #2.)
Coastal Carolina has been ranked among the nation's top five in each week of the regular season this year - starting at #7 in the preseason. Coastal moved to a previous program-best #2 in the Coaches poll after a 43-22 win over Charleston Southern. The Chants have held the #3 spot in the media poll for five of the last seven weeks.
