KIAWAH ISLAND - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team carded the third-best round of the day - a 3-under par 285 - to improve two spots and finish 12th at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic, played the par-72, 7,061-yard Jack Nicklaus Signature Turtle Point Golf Course. The Chanticleers finished with a 54-hole score of 891 (304-302-285).

Winthrop led throughout the event and held off a hard-charging Georgia Southern squad to claim team medalist honors. Winthrop was one of the two teams to post a better score than Coastal in the final round with a 281 and finished the event with an even-par score of 864 (288-295-281). Georgia Southern, led by Scott Wolfes' course-record 63, had a team score of 278 and finished four strokes back for runner-up honors, shooting 868 (301-289-278).

Alfredo Ruiz led the Chanticleers. The sophomore turned in a final-round, 1-under par 71 to place a career-best 12th (tied) while posting a career-best finish in relation to par at 3-over. Overall, he shot 219 (73-75-71). Starting on hole 10, Ruiz had three birdies versus one bogey on his opening nine holes to make the turn at 2-under. He began his inward nine with a bogey, but had birdies on holes 5 and 6 to get to 3-under. However, bogeys on holes 8 and 9 - his 17th and 18th holes - forced Ruiz to settle for his 71.

Harrison Frye, playing in his second career event, had CCU's best round of the day with a season-best 70. The freshman moved up 24 spots to earn his first collegiate top 20 finish, tying for 19th. Frye, who finished the event with a 54-hole score of 5-over 221, showed significant improvement over the three rounds. He shot 77 in the opening round - tying for 46th - before shooting 74 and his final round 70. Frye had a birdie on his second hole before suffering back-to-back bogies. After a par on the par three 14th hole, Frye reeled off three straight birdies to get to 2-under par at the turn. He began his inward nine with a bogey, but immediately responded with a birdie before closing his round with seven straight pars for his 70.

Andrew Dorn, like Frye, improved 24 spots on the final day. The senior struggled in rounds one and two, shooting 81-77, before rallying with a final-round 71, his fourth round of par of better this season and 33rd of his career. Overall, Dorn tied for 62nd with a three-day score of 229. He only had three birdies, but he came through with 14 pars versus one double bogey to card his 1-under 71.

Ben Wheeler finished 47th (tied) with a score of 226 (74-77-75), while Peter Valasek, who shot a 1-over par 73 Tuesday, joined Dorn in a tied for 62nd with a three-day total of 229 (80-76-73).

Olle Widgren, playing as an individual, tied for 35th with a total of 76-67-81=224. Ryan Carpenter was also playing as an individual but, despite shooting a 69 Monday, had to withdraw in the final round due to sickness.

The Wendy's Kiawah Classic marked the final team event for Coastal Carolina this fall. The Chanticleers will resume their 2014-15 schedule Feb. 2-3 at the annual Seabest Invitational, played at Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.
