Football Places Three on Academic All-District Team

CONWAY - Seniors Chad Hamilton, Mo Ashley and Brett Johnson were voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 football team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This is the first time in school history the Chanticleers have landed at least three student-athletes on the academic all-district squad.
The District 4 team includes NCAA Division I football teams - both FBS and FCS - from the states of South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. All players on the All-District teams will now be voted upon for the prestigious CoSIDA/Capital One All-America football team.
Both Hamilton (Charleston, S.C.) and Ashley (Honea Path, S.C.) graduated from Coastal Carolina this past spring and are critical components in the Chanticleers ranking among the top offenses in the FCS. Johnson (North Augusta, S.C.) is among the team leaders in tackles and tackles for losses.
Hamilton graduated with a 3.43 GPA in education and is currently pursuing his Master's in education. The two-time All-Big South selection and All-American candidate has been Coastal's top-graded offensive lineman seven times this season and he leads the team with 41 knock-down blocks.
Ashley graduated with a 3.33 GPA in exercise and sport science and is on track for a second bachelor's degree in biology as he prepares to enter physical therapy school in the future. Ashley is one of just four Chanticleers to play in all of CCU's games since the start of the 2011 season and he is the only Chant to start each of the team's last 37 games.
Collectively, Hamilton and Ashley have helped Coastal rank fifth in the FCS by allowing just six sacks this season. They have helped quarterback Alex Ross be a Walter Payton Award candidate and running back De'Angelo Henderson ranks among the FCS leaders in both scoring and rushing. Coastal's offense leads the Big South and ranks among the FCS top 20 in total offense, scoring, fewest sacks allowed, fewest tackles for loss allowed, first downs, third down conversions, fourth down conversions and red zone offense.
Last season, Coastal Carolina led the FCS in fewest tackles for losses allowed (3.33) and, spanning the 2012, '13 and '14 seasons - the pair have helped Coastal allow just 63 sacks in 1,128 pass attempts (or one sack in every 18 pass attempts). Also, the two helped pave the way for All-American running back and current Baltimore Raven Lorenzo Taliaferro while the Chanticleers set or tied 18 Big South offensive single-season team records.
Johnson carries a 3.71 GPA and is set to graduate this December with a degree in health promotion. He has started seven games this season, missing one due to injury. Johnson has 42 tackles this season and ranks third on the team with 5.5 tackles for losses while adding two sacks, a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble. He helped Coastal Carolina set a Big South record by holding three straight opponents to three points or less. This year's CCU defense ranks ninth in the FCS in scoring defense (16.7 ppg) and 12th in passing efficiency defense (104.06 rating).
