CONWAY - Coastal Carolina will return to campus this spring and some of the nation's top programs - including North Carolina, South Carolina and Clemson - will compete in the Chanticleers' new state-of-the-art Springs Brooks Stadium.
Of the 32 teams on the schedule, 12 played in an NCAA Regional last year, including two that advanced to a Super Regional, and 10 of the 12 will play in Springs Brooks Stadium. The 2014 NCAA Super Regional teams include Maryland and College of Charleston, while NCAA Regional teams on the schedule include North Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Bryant, Kent State, Old Dominion, Campbell and Liberty.
"I cannot express how excited we are, as a program, for this season," said head coach Gary Gilmore. "First, Springs Brooks Stadium is as fine of a facility as there is in the country. Second, this is the most challenging schedule I have ever put together. In fact, I firmly believe we have the most difficult non-conference schedule in the nation. So, not only will we be playing in one of the best facilities in the country, but many of the best teams in the country will be playing on our field.
"Overall, I can't think of a better way to open Springs Brooks Stadium. The fact that South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and NCAA Tournament teams want to come here is a tribute to what Springs Brooks Stadium does for our program nationally. Our fans will have a lot of fun this season and in the coming years."
The Chanticleers first game in the new stadium will come against Old Dominion on Friday, February 13 as part of the opening weekend Caravelle Resort Classic. 2014 NCAA participant Maryland, Western Kentucky and Canisius complete the tournament field.
The second weekend (Feb. 20-22), the Chants will host the annual Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach. Perennial Atlantic Coast Conference powers Georgia Tech and North Carolina State highlight the field along with Florida International and Albany.
From Feb. 27-Mar. 2, Coastal will host Kent State (2014 NCAA Regional and 2013 College World Series participant), West Virginia, Ball State and Illinois in the annual Chanticleer Classic. Coastal's final weekend of tournaments will be Mar. 6-9 when Michigan, Michigan State, Toledo and Akron convene for the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Starting Mar. 10 (Tuesday), Coastal will play five straight at home, versus 2014 NCAA Regional teams North Carolina, Bryant and Clemson. First, North Carolina comes to Conway for the first time since 2001. The Tar Heels and Chanticleers have met on 57 previous occasions, including 20 times on Coastal's campus. The following weekend (Mar. 13-15), Coastal will host Bryant in a three-game series.
The subsequent Tuesdays (Mar. 17 and Mar. 24), Coastal will welcome Clemson and South Carolina, respectively. Clemson last visited the Grand Strand in 2007 when top seed Coastal Carolina hosted the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional. The last time Clemson played a regular-season contest at CCU was a two-game series (May 10-11) in 1994. This will be Coastal's 52nd all-time meeting with the Tigers.
Likewise, South Carolina will be making its first trip to the Grand Strand since the Chanticleers, playing as the #4 national seed, hosted the Gamecocks in the thrilling 2010 NCAA Myrtle Beach Super Regional. After playing in Columbia last season, Coastal and South Carolina will complete the home-and-home series this season in Conway on Mar. 24. The last time USC played on Coastal's campus was in 1993, a 7-6 Chanticleer win.
Sandwiched between the Clemson and South Carolina games, the Chanticleers will open Big South play at UNC Asheville Mar. 20-22. Coastal's first home conference series will be versus Winthrop Mar. 27-29.
Coastal will travel to Wake Forest Mar. 31 as 16 of the team's final 28 games will be played on the road. The Demon Deacons will come to Conway on May 12.
The second half of the schedule features home conference series with Longwood, Radford and Liberty as well as road conference series at High Point, Presbyterian College and Campbell.
Coastal will play a home-and-home series with College of Charleston - April 14 in Conway and April 22 at Patriots Point.
As part of an eight-game road swing, Coastal will play at UNC Wilmington (April 28) before playing at weekend series at Florida State (May 1-3).
