Chanticleers Split Two Against Purdue

Feb. 14, 2014

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team split a doubleheader with Purdue on Friday's opening day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic, winning the opener 3-0 before falling in the nightcap 11-5 at Coastal Carolina Softball Stadium.

The Chanticleers moved to 3-1 on the season, while Purdue now stands 2-3-1.

Kory Hayden hit two-run homers in each game, giving her four longballs through the first four games of the season, while Kiana Quolas notched her first shutout of the year in the first game.

Quolas scattered just four hits, struck out five and walked none for her first shutout of the season as she improved her record to 3-0. She allowed just one runner past first base, which came on a bloop double in the seventh inning.

Offensively, Coastal put enough runs on the board with a run in the second inning and two in the third on Hayden's first homer of the day.

Amanda Daneker got the second inning started with a single. Morgan Noad then bunted to third baseman Ashley Burkhardt, whose throw to second was high and went into centerfield. That allowed pinchrunner Katie Kalasunas to score from first and make it 1-0. Daneker finished the game with two of the Chants' four hits, her second multi-hit game of the season.

In the third inning, Bri Chiusano laced a liner down the right-field line for a one-out. Two batters later, Hayden crushed a 3-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for the three-run cushion.

Purdue led from the outset of the second game as Burkhardt hit three-run home runs in each of the first two innings.

Hayden answered the first one with her second two-run shot in the bottom of the first. After Chiusano had led off with an infield single, Hayden powered one over the fence in right-center for the 34th homer of her career.

After Burkhardt's second home run made it 6-2, Coastal got two runs back in the bottom of the third. Chiusano reached on an infield single with one out, Quolas singled to right and Hayden ripped an RBI double to the gap in right-center. Two batters later, Morgan Noad added an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-4.

Purdue, though, regained the four-run lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Danielle Fletcher.

The Chants came back with one run in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a wild pitch, a fielder's choice and an illegal pitch. With the bases loaded, the Boilermakers got a groundout to keep Coastal from getting closer.

CCU had another chance in the sixth after a single by Quolas, an error and a walk loaded the bases again, but a flyout ended that threat.

The Boilermakers then tacked on three more runs in the seventh, finishing with 12 hits in the game. Morgan Mastriania started the contest and took the loss, allowing the three runs in the first inning. Ashley Bagwell pitched 6 2-3 innings of relief, allowing just four earned runs, striking out four and walking three.

Hayden, Chiusano and Quolas each had two of Coastal's eight hits, with Hayden collecting three RBIs - giving her five on the day.
