Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight Over ECU

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match Friday afternoon, defeating the East Carolina Pirates 6-1 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. With the win, the Chanticleers (13-2, 1-1) broke the Pirates (9-7, 0-0) streak of four consecutive wins.
Coastal struck first, with each team trading doubles matches before the Chants clinched the opening point with a win at No. 2.
Amanda Malatek and Marie Babayan struck first for the Chants, downing Melis Tanik and Betsy Zurawel 8-4 at No. 3.
ECU countered with an 8-6 at No. 1 as Dana Gray and Maria Storoheva edged Honami Yazawa and Kourtney Kowal.
Libby Scott and Dominique De Wit sealed the doubles point for the Chants at No. 2 with an 8-6 win over Michelle Castro and Emily Goreneveld.
Yazawa gave the Chants a 2-0 lead as played shifted to singles, grabbing a point at No. 3 after defeating Storozheva 6-4, 6-1. The win extends the freshman's impressive overall singles record to 12-1.
Delay put the Chants up 3-0, winning her ninth singles match of the season as she bested Goreneveld at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0.
Babayan clinched the match for the Chants at No. 5, winning the match's fourth point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Gray.
Malatek won in straight sets at No. 6 and Scott won a three-set tiebreaker at No. 1 to give the Chants their final two points. Malatek defeated Zurawel 6-2, 6-4, while Scott won her third set 10-8 over Castro after winning the first 6-3 and falling in the second 4-6.
Tanik recorded ECU's lone point, outlasting Kowal in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Next on the Chants' schedule is a 2 p.m. meeting with in-conference rival Campbell on March 25, in Buies Creek, N.C.
