Coastal Baseball Rallies Past UMBC, 7-5

MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth to defeat UMBC in the second game of a mixed doubleheader Sunday night. Prior to the UMBC game, the Chanticleers defeated Elon, 13-4.

Coastal Carolina (6-8) will conclude the Chanticleer Classic Monday at 4 pm by hosting UNC Greensboro at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Reid Moman, who scored the game-winning run, had two hits, along with Richard Carter and Connor Owings. Andrew Beckwith (1-1) pitched the final 4.1 innings to earn his first collegiate victory. The freshman allowed just two hits and struck out two.

UMBC (1-5) struck first, scoring once in the top of the third. D.J. Smith singled, took second on a balk and moved to third on Andrew Casali's single. Vince Corbi followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Smith for the game's first run.

Coastal responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the third. Carter singled, Michael Paez reached on an error and Owings loaded the bases with a bunt single. Zach Remillard hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Retrievers scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. UMBC loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth thanks to two singles and a walk. New CCU pitcher Zac Burke hit Anthony Gatto to force in a run and keep the bases loaded for Brandon Coluccio, who followed with a two-run single. Mark Esposito drove kept the rally going with an RBI single down the right field line.

Coastal rallied with six runs in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. Owings had a leadoff single and Remillard walked. G.K. Young doubled down the left field line to drive in Owings and move Remillard to third. Coastal then tied the game with three consecutive hits, an RBI double from Anthony Marks, an RBI single from Moman and an RBI single from Nick Oberg. Tyler Chadwick reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Moman would score on a wild pitch to break the tie and Carter reloaded the bases with a walk. Two batters later, Owings brought home Oberg with an RBI ground out.
