Final Stats

MYRTLE BEACH - Coastal Carolina scored in six of its eight innings, including five in the eighth, to cruise to a 13-4 victory over Elon in the first of two games in a missed doubleheader Sunday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Zach Remillard led the CCU (5-8) attack on offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Michael Paez, Connor Owings and Nick Oberg each added two hits. Chanticleer starter Tyler Herb (1-3) earned the win. He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed four hits, one run and four walks.

Elon (10-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Quinn Bower reached on a leadoff single and scored thanks to a Casey Jones RBI double. Coastal answered with two runs in the home half. Richard Carter delivered a leadoff single. After a sacrifice bunt, Owings and Remillard had back-to-back singles, the latter plating Carter and marking the first earned run Elon pitcher Jake Stalzer had allowed in 23.1 innings this season. A throwing error moved Owings and Remillard up 90 feet and Colin Hering followed with an RBI ground out.

Stalzer (3-1) would take the loss for the Phoenix. He allowed seven hits and six runs (three earned) over 3.1 innings.

The Chants pushed their lead to two, 3-1, in the bottom of the third. Remillard lined a double to left center field, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Coastal tacked on three runs in the fourth to lead 6-1h. G.K. Young singled to start the home half and Oberg followed with a sacrifice bunt. However, an error on the play allowed Young to take third and put Oberg on second. Freshman John McNulty drove in the two runners with his first career hit, a two-run single back up the middle.

Paez put Coastal up 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth after hitting his first career home run.

The Phoenix cut into their deficit in the top seventh. With one out, Ryan Cooper, Jones and Sebastian Gomez had consecutive singles to manufacture a run and make the score 7-2. However, Coastal got that run back in the bottom of the seventh. Colin Hering drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on Oberg's double.

Coastal took advantage of two Elon errors and four hits in the eighth inning to score five runs and expand its lead to 13-2. Paez started the frame with by reaching on an error and scoring one batter later on Owing's double. The Chants would load the bases and pinch hitter Steven Whitaker came through with his first career hit, a two-run double. Fellow freshman pinch hitter Kyle Jackson followed with his first career hit, an RBI single. Oberg followed suit with an RBI single of his own.

Elon provided the 13-4 final after scoring two runs in the top of the ninth. Blaine Bower singled and D.J. Paone walked before Danny Lynch hit a two-run triple.
