Coastal Women's Tennis Falls 7-0 at #56 Winthrop

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team closed out its regular season schedule with a 7-0 loss at #56 Winthrop on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chanticleers' Big South record drops to 5-4, ensuring them the fifth seed in the conference tournament and a first-round matchup against Campbell next week.
Winthrop, meanwhile, improves to 14-4, 8-1 and currently holds second place in the Big South standings.
The Eagles started the match with a sweep of the three doubles courts to take the opening point.
Libby Scott and Honami Yazawa fell in an 8-4 match at No. 1 to Andressa and Alice Garcia. At No. 2, Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu and Caitlin Cridland picked up an 8-4 win over Marie Babayan and Amanda Malatek. Tijana Uzelac and Beth Williamson closed out doubles for Winthrop with an 8-7 tiebreaking-win at No. 3 over Kourtney Kowal and Dominique De Wit.
Winthrop's impressive play continued as the match shifted to singles, taking the match's six remaining points, four of which came in straight sets.
Andressa Garcia defeated Scott at No. 1 by a 6-2, 6-3 decision, while Alice Garcia prevailed over Yazawa at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6.
Coastal's Romane Delay was bested in straight sets at No. 3 by Cridland, and Uzelac outlasted Kowal in three sets at No. 4.
Gunaysu came away from the No. 5 match against Malatek with a 6-4, 6-1 win, and Monica Aguado claimed a three-set win at No. 6 over Babayan.
The Big South Conference women's tennis championship begins on Monday with first-round action in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Chanticleers lost their only match against Campbell this season by a 4-3 score back on March 27.
