JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Reggie Nelson used a 2.14m (7-00.25) high jump to become the first Coastal Carolina University track & field male individual to advance to the NCAA National Championship since Jason Flanagan earned All-American honors in the javelin in 2012.
Nelson finished the NCAA East Preliminary Round tied for tenth in the high jump. The top-12 jumpers advanced to the NCAA National Championship which will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., June 11-14. Nelson will join high jumpers from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Charlotte, Clemson, Cornell, East Carolina, Fordham, Kansas State, Lipscomb, LIU Brooklyn, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Penn, Southern Illinois, St. Peter's, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Western Illinois.
The men's 4x400 relay team consisting of DeAndra Lipscomb, Corey Hackett-Greene, Alexander Hass and Stevie Brunson missed out on a trip to Eugene by four spots. The Chants completed the race in a school record time of 3:08.12 but finished 16th overall. The Chants needed to finish in the top-12 in order to advance.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Jessica Gelibert, Camille Hurley, Christal Green and Teka Simpson also missed out on a trip to Eugene. The Chanticleers finished 16th overall with a time of 3:36.47.
Nelson will now begin preparations for the NCAA National Championship which will be held June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore. Nelson will compete on Friday, June 13 at 6:20 p.m. against the 23-best high jumpers in the country.
