
Chants Split Matches on Final Day of UNCW Tournament

The Chants now sit at 1-2 overall after the opening weekend's matches.
The Chants began the day on a good note, taking the first set over Eastern Washington 25-20. The Eagles tied the match in the second game after edging the Chants 25-20, but Coastal was able to replicate the results of the first set and take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw back-and-forth action, resulting in a 24-24 tie. The Chants managed to grab the final two points to break the tie and close out the match.
Hardeman, who led the Chants with 18 kills against UNCW on Friday, again led Coastal's attack against Eastern Washington as the freshman was credited with 12 kills to go along with her two aces and eight digs.
Coastal's seniors also played a large role in the win as Jenna Orner led the Chants with 26 digs, Sam Skryd notched 38 assists and Katie Martin added four blocks.
Coastal surrendered the first game against Fairfield 25-23, but rebounded nicely with a 25-18 second set to tie the match at one apiece.
Fairfield regained the match lead after topping the Chants 25-21 in the third set, but again the Chants responded, outlasting Fairfield 29-27 in fourth set to once again tie the match. The Stags would not be denied however, and managed to slip past the Chants 15-13 in the final set.
Hardeman once again the Chants' attacking efforts, finishing with 21 kills and a .245 attacking percentage. Junior Lian Bernett finished close behind with 17 kills while fellow junior Gabriella Horvath recorded 13.
Skryd's 51 assists against Fairfield brought her total for the day to 89, and Orner once again led the Chants in digs with 23.
With the opening weekend completed, the Chants will begin to look ahead to the Jacksonville Invitational, which begins with matches against Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville on Friday, September 5. Coastal will close out the tournament with one match on September 6, against North Florida.
