RALEIGH, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered its first defeat since the season opener, falling on the road to ACC member N.C. State 3-0 Thursday night.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and dropped the Chanticleers to 3-2-0 on the season. N.C. State scored in the 35th, 80th and 89th minutes to improve its record to 2-3-0.
After a quiet first 30 minutes of play with just one combined shot on goal, the game was halted by a lightning delay. When play resumed following a nearly 50-minute delay, the action picked up.
Coastal's Sam Patterson put a shot on goal two minutes after the restart. However, N.C. State goalkeeper McKenzie Stelljes made the save and the Wolfpack got on the board with their next shot just over a minute later. Junior forward Brittany Stanko took a long pass over the top by Caroline Gentry and put her shot past Chants' goalkeeper Faith Farley inside the far post.
After a Wolfpack header went high, Coastal's Sam Patterson and Daniella Famili had back-to-back shots, the former on goal, before Farley saved two N.C. State attempts to close out the first half.
The Chants had a chance in the first minute of the second half as Kacey Kelley put a shot on goal that was stopped by Stelljes. N.C. State then started to control play as Coastal was whistled for a number of fouls. Coastal sophomore Becca Austin came on for Farley in goal in the 59th minute and made a save on a header.
The Wolfpack had another attempt on a header minutes later go wide and Austin stopped a third header in the 77th minute. However, following a Chanticleer foul, NCSU freshman Kayla Sagger found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Gentry sent in a cross that the Coastal defense got a head on, but the ball went to Sagger, who finished the play. Sagger then assisted on the final goal, scored by senior Jessica Baity.
N.C. State had a 10-5 edge in shots in the second half and a 20-12 advantage for the game. The Wolfpack led in shots on goal 8-4, while Coastal was called for 10 fouls, compared to just two for NCSU.
Kelley led Coastal in shots for the fifth straight game, recording six. Farley finished with three saves, while Austin totaled two.
Coastal returns home to face Davidson on Sunday, Sept. 7, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at CCU Soccer Stadium.
