Chanticleers Fall to Davidson

Sept. 7, 2014

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season on Sunday, falling to Davidson by a 2-0 decision.

The Chanticleers (3-3-0) actually outshot Davidson 14-6 in the game, but the Wildcats got loose for single goals in each half to improve their record to 3-3-0. The defeat snapped a six-game win streak for Coastal on its homefield going back to last season.

The Chants had two good scoring chances right at the start, but shots by Kacey Kelley and Ellie Taylor went wide and high, respectively, in the first five minutes.

Davidson then countered and was able to find a few openings in the Chanticleer defensive third before capitalizing in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead. Sarah Tuggle got the ball in space on the right side of 18-yard box and fed a pass across the middle to Vicky Bruce, who one-touched a shot into the left corner for her second goal of the season.

The remainder of the half was controlled by both defenses as each team finished the first 45 minutes with just four shots apiece.

Coastal again created an opportunity early in the second half as Brianna Panico made a run up the middle off a pass by Kelley and fed the ball over the left side for Taylor, but Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Locke came out and was able to block the shot.

Three minutes later, the Wildcats made it 2-0 as Tuggle scored her first of the season on a breakaway. After getting behind the Coastal backline, she took a header pass from Stephanie Piperno and beat Chants' goalkeeper Becca Austin with a high shot. The two goals were the only Davidson shots on net in the game.

Down a pair of goals, CCU controlled much of the possession from that point on, outshooting the Wildcats 10-2 for the half. However, most of the shots were either blocked away or missed the goal. In the 85th minute, a Davidson foul led to a Chant free kick from 23 yards out at the top of the box, but Taylor's shot sailed high.

In the final minute, Rylie Johnson put a long-range boot on net, headed for the upper left corner, but a leaping Locke was able to tip it away and finish off the shutout. Locke, who came into the game leading the Atlantic 10 Conference in saves, totaled four in the game.

Taylor finished with a game-high four shot attempts for Coastal. Austin made her first career start in goal in place of Faith Farley, who had left Thursday night's game due to injury.

The Chanticleers will next play in the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 14. Coastal will face Elon in the first game before taking on host UNC Wilmington in the final game of the tournament second.
