WILMINGTON, N.C. - Elon broke a scoreless tie in the 85th minute and went on to take a 1-0 victory over the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team in the opening game of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational at UNC Wilmington on Friday.
The Chanticleers fell to 3-4 on the season, while Elon improved to 2-4-0.
Elon sophomore Sarah Henson tallied the game's only goal at the 84:25 mark. Samantha Burch sent a centering pass from the left endline that went by Coastal goalkeeper Becca Austin and Henson was able to tap it in for her first goal of the season.
Both teams struggled to put together offense throughout the game as Elon finished with a 9-7 edge in shots. The Phoenix held a 7-2 advantage in the second half after Coastal led the way 5-2 in the first 45 minutes. Elon totaled three shots on goal, while the Chants had two.
Coastal recorded the first five shots of the game through the first 24 minutes of play. Kacey Kelley's shot on goal almost 11 minutes in was the first attempt and her follow-up shortly after went high. Daniella Famili took a shot three minutes later that was blocked before Ellie Taylor put another goal at 21:00 mark that forced a second save by Sydney Branson. Taylor then got off another attempt that went wide.
The Phoenix finally got their first shot of the game in the 40th minute, with Austin making the save. Elon came out with more offense in the second half, recording four of the first five shots, including one that hit the crossbar in the 70th minute.
Kelley had a shot in the 84th minute go high before the Phoenix worked the ball back down deep into the Chants' defensive third to set up the goal.
Austin finished with two saves in the game, while Branson and Kate Murphy combined for two saves and the shutout. Kelley and Taylor each had three shots for Coastal.
The Chanticleers play their second and final game in the tournament on Sunday as they take on host UNC Wilmington at 2:30 p.m.
